MANCHESTER, N.H. —

WMUR's partners at PolitiFact are examining President Donald Trump's claim that his tariffs could generate enough revenue to eliminate federal income taxes.

PolitiFact found that if Trump's current tariffs remain in place through 2034, they would generate about $256 billion a year.

PolitiFact described that amount as "peanuts" compared with the nearly $2.43 trillion in revenue that would be lost if income taxes were eliminated.

"What we heard from economists is that every option for exchanging tariffs for taxes would be difficult, and probably impossible," said PolitiFact Chief Correspondent Lou Jacobson.
