Mercer County officials unveiled a handmade quilt on Thursday, honoring America's 250th birthday in 2026.
Each of the 48 Mercer County municipalities created its own quilt square, with 49 squares in total after adding the one for Mercer County itself.
The squares were all unique to each municipality, helping tell the story of the county's history. Mercer County was created in 1800 and named after Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer.
"We've had the underground railroad come through here, we have a lot of fairs, we've had a lot of lakes, we've had a lot of history in Mercer County, and some of our squares really represent that," Ann Coleman, Mercer County commissioner, said.
The quilt will be on display in the Mercer County Courthouse through 2026.
