BLOOMINGTON — Clothed in a white College Football Playoff -branded sweatsuit, Aiden Fisher sat, stone-faced, inside a repurposed office somewhere along the outskirts of Notre Dame ’s sprawling stadium complex.

His team had just been unceremoniously dumped from that playoff, its Cinderella season ended in a northern Indiana December night so dark it seemed like the world ended beyond the floodlights. Fisher’s expression conveyed similar emptiness.
