Scientists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and the University of Osaka have been experimenting with 'bum breathing' as a method to increase oxygen levels when lungs fail.
The brain behind the concept, Dr Takanori Takebe, was taken aback by how intrusive ventilator usage can be when his father contracted pneumonia, reports Science News.
Drawing inspiration from certain animals that absorb oxygen through their skin, genitals or guts, it dawned on Takanori that the human intestinal tract is abundant in blood vessels (which explains why enemas can administer medicine directly into the bloodstream).
