Thirunelly Temple is an ancient and very sacred temple located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, which is considered to be the abode of Lord Vishnu.

The Supreme Court on Friday said that every rupee offered in a temple is the property of God and cannot be used to improve the financial condition of any co-operative bank.

The court dismissed petitions filed by several Kerala cooperative banks and upheld the High Court's order directing the Tirunelli Temple Devaswom to return the deposits within two months.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the case. During the hearing, the CJI asked the lawyers representing the banks, "Do you intend to use the temple's money to save the bank?"
