The absence of legally binding targets in Labour’s new child poverty strategy is “deeply concerning,” Big Issue founder Lord John Bird has warned – and could allow policymakers to “dodge” accountability.

The government released its keenly anticipated plan to tackle child poverty on Friday (5 December).

The strategy includes measures to stop children growing up in B&B temporary accommodation and to make childcare more accessible for families on universal credit .

Combined with previous pledges to end the two-child benefit cap and to expand free school meal provision to all children from families receiving universal credit, the strategy has the potential to lift 550,000 children out of poverty by 2030.
