The Trump administration’s plan to shift homeless services funds away from permanent housing programs toward transitional housing could cause more than 850 West Virginians to lose their housing, according to estimates by a national homelessness advocacy organization.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last month issued a notice of funding opportunity with major changes to its plan to distribute about $3.9 billion in funding for continuums of care, the local agencies that coordinate services and funding for homeless people.

According to the notice, no more than 30% of the funding for next year can be used for permanent housing programs. In past years, as much as about 90% of continuums of care funding has gone to permanent housing.
