Joe Root picked up exactly where he left off, smashing a stunning 138 not out to give England a glimmer of hope in their quest to reclaim the Ashes . Jofra Archer chipped in with a handy 38 from 36 balls, much to the annoyance of the Aussies, before they finally made a breakthrough and bowled England out for 334.
Despite being full of confidence, optimism was soon dampened by Australia's top order. Jake Weatherald blasted his way to 72, followed by Marnus Labuschagne's 65 and Steve Smith's 61 runs, putting the hosts firmly in control.
