EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Microplastics in our environment can be a big issue for health, leading to Alzheimer’s and even heart attacks.

These develop because of hard-to-recycle plastics, like multilayer plastics, that are found in grocery stores and hospitals.

A team of Michigan State University researchers developed a new type of plastic that can be recycled and could replace this hard-to-recycle type.

Multilayer plastics are commonly found covering food and medical products.

Even though they are very thin, they have 12 layers of different types of polymers in them. Since these polymers are all different, they cannot be recycled together.

To recycle this plastic, each layer would have to be separated, which can become tedious.

The MSU researchers developed a multilayer plastic t
