Montgomery Fire and Rescue battled a large fire at a historic building Friday morning in downtown Montgomery.
Units went to the 500 block of Sayre Street about 8 a.m., said District Fire Chief K. R. Peoples. The location is the old Sayre Street School, an historic two-story structure built in 1891. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The blaze was a three-alarm fire, Peoples said, with at least 60 fire personnel answering the call, he said.
The fire was called under control at 10:42 a.m., Peoples said. There was extensive damage in the structure but no injuries have been reported to fire personnel, he said.
Traffic in the area was blocked Friday morning for an extended period of time, Peoples said.
