When the Detroit Lions have needed it most this season, the bench players in their secondary have come up with some major performances.

After their exciting “Legion of Whom” game in October against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions earned a win over the Dallas Cowboys relying on some similarly unexpected defensive players.

While one of the NFL’s top offenses in the Cowboys managed to move the ball well, the Detroit defense had three turnovers and came up with timely stops to help secure the 44-30 victory .

For the game, Pro Football Focus gave the Lions a 77.8 defensive grade, the highest since that win over Tampa Bay in Week 7. The team was led by veteran backup safety Avonte Maddox, who stepped up to play 80 snaps for the Lions and earned a 90.3 defensive grade — the second-high
