Wilmington police are cautioning residents to be aware of a phone scam claiming to be part of the department.
The department has received several reports about a caller misrepresenting himself as “Captain Randy Nowell,” the name of a department member. The caller claims to be contacting residents about a “confidential” matter and asks for personal information.
This is not a real call from Wilmington Police Department.
“Similar to scams reported by partner agencies in the area, scammers will invoke the name of a police officer and will often allege that an individual – or a family member – has a pending charge or warrant, and then direct them to take some action, such as paying a fine using a payment card or gift card,” the department said.
