Vice President JD Vance is swatting away marital rift rumors with second lady Usha Vance after rampant online speculation in recent weeks.
Vance told NBC News in an interview that “I think that we kind of get a kick out of it" after he was asked about frustration over media coverage of the second lady being photographed without her wedding ring.
A spokeswoman for the second lady told USA TODAY in a statement Nov. 21 that she is "a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes." The Vances have three children: Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3.
The vice president said that "it's funny" and "I actually don’t think that it's tough" when addressing the headlines. Vance also said that days after first leaving her wedding ring behind, his spouse accidentally did so once again after a shower.
"She was like, 'Oh, if I don’t go back and get them, there’s going to be some ridiculous psycho who talks about it on social media,'" Vance said. “And I was like, let them. It’s not even worth the trip to run back upstairs. So we actually have a little bit of fun with it. And we thought that whole viral social media cycle was kind of funny."
Vance, who married his wife in 2014, told NBC News that "with anything in life, you take the good with the bad."
"You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too," he continued. "But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha’s really taken to it, and it’s been kind of cool to see how she’s developed and evolved in this new role."
The second lady ignited Internet speculation last month when she visited Camp Lejeune, a military base, alongside first lady Melania Trump without wearing her wedding ring. Vance has been pictured with and without her wedding band on numerous occasions despite social media discourse.
Vance referred to himself as “a romantic” in an August interview with USA TODAY while opening up about popstar Taylor Swift's summertime engagement to NFL tight end Travis Kelce.
“I'm a romantic," Vance said in the interview. "When I see two people who are in love getting married, I just wish them the best, and I congratulate 'em, and I hope they have a very long and healthy and happy life together."
