AYDEN, N.C. (WITN) - An Ayden woman’s questions about her electric bill deposit are creating change for her and others after the town acknowledged it incorrectly applied a new policy retroactively.
Kara Walters paid a $450 deposit to turn on her lights in Ayden. She said the town told her that after a year of payments, she would get the money back as credit on her bill.
However, Ayden changed its policy in April . It now requires two years of good payments for that credit to be applied.
“To pay a large deposit and then not get it back, then the terms change, that’s a whole year you’re going without it, especially when your electric bills are averaging $400 to $600 per month as is,” Walters said.
