The state of Oregon announced Friday that it has once again recharged the debit-like cards of approximately 757,000 residents who rely on federal food assistance to eat.
The early December recharge comes amid ongoing threats from the Trump administration to ax benefits and a frenzied early November , when the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history let the accounts run dry. The program sometimes referred to as food stamps is formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. One in six Oregonians and one in eight Americans are enrolled.
“After last month’s uncertainty and disruptions, we are grateful to be able to return to issuing SNAP food benefits when and how people expect us to,” said Oregon Department of Human Services Director Liesl Wendt, in a news
