AMES, Iowa — Penn State and Matt Campbell have been negotiating a deal to make him the next Nittany Lions head coach, ESPN reports.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported the two sides are finalizing an 8-year deal on Friday night. According to Thamel, the deal is pending "board approval for the compensation."

Campbell's future in Ames was up in the air as Thamel reported earlier on Friday Penn State and Campbell met the day before and have "been working toward an agreement since."

He added that Campbell is expected to meet with players at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Other national media outlets, including ON3 and The Athletic, also reported Penn State was looking to hire Campbell.
