LETTS, Iowa (KWQC) - The Nature Conservancy has expanded its Swamp White Oak Preserve in Letts, Iowa, adding another 400 acres of protected land.
The preserve protects local biodiversity and wildlife while providing recreational opportunities, including hiking and bird-watching. It also helps reduce the impact of flooding.
The expansion increases the land dedicated to conservation in the area.
“Over the last 40 years, we’ve grown from just a few tracts that were gifted to us to over 5,000 acres in this area, protected permanently,” said Carissa Shoemaker, Floodplain Protection Specialist for Eastern Iowa through The Nature Conservancy.
Those who wish to support the work can become a member or donate to the Iowa chapter of the Nature Conservancy.
