STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — December marks the start of meteorological winter and introduces such seasonal conditions to New York City. Recently, residents have contended with bursts of arctic air. But come next week, the state could face the threat of clipper storms.

A clipper storm, as defined by the National Weather Service , is a fast-moving storm that drops into the U.S. over the Great Lakes from Alberta, Canada. These storms typically produce fluffy snow; however, as of Friday it does not appear the city will experience any accumulation.

According to Matt Benz, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather , arctic air will push into the city on Monday, which “sets the pattern” for the week ahead. This latest blast of cold air is a result of a disruption to the polar vortex.
