Penn State has hired a new head coach — and is retaining its interim coach, too.

Terry Smith, the Nittany Lions’ beloved assistant turned interim coach, is expected to remain at Penn State on Matt Campbel l’s staff, according to multiple reports Friday night.

News broke on Friday night that Campbell, Iowa State’s longtime head coach, was hired by athletic director Pat Kraft and Penn State’s brass after a lengthy coaching search .

Smith was never a leading candidate to replace James Franklin despite strong pushes from players, lettermen, fans and alumni and a strong finish to the season.
