JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The sound of voices chanting “Long live Matthew” rang through a Westside neighborhood Friday night as several gathered to honor 18-year-old Matthew Jackson, a Riverside High School senior who was shot and killed nearly two weeks ago while trying to break up a fight outside the Burger King where he worked.

His mother, Natasha Jackson, stood surrounded by friends and family, candles flickering in seas of blue as she remembered her son’s courage and compassion.

“He jumped in to protect someone," she said. "It could have been anybody, so today and forever, I want to honor my son.”

Police said the shooting happened Nov. 22 after a confrontation between one of Jackson’s co-workers and another man escalated. Jackson tried to intervene before shots were fired. He died at th
