There’s only so much magic one can squeeze until it runs out.

In front of a feverish home crowd featuring an array of checkered flags and painted chests, No. 8-seeded Portland fell to No. 16 Furman 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championships, ending the Pilots season and denying the program its first trip to the College Cup in 30 years.

It took a jaw-dropping score to end the Pilots’ season. In the 75th minute, freshman Braden Dunham launched a soaring shot of some 40 yards that didn’t come to rest until it cleared the fingertips of Portland keeper Miguel Angel Hernandez and into the goal.
