The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has identified and charged 33-year-old Oscar Solarzano in a light rail stabbing, months after the city experienced a high-profile attack on the same transport system. The police confirmed to Newsweek by email that the suspect has been charged with five counts, including attempted first-degree murder.

His arrest has sparked online outrage over his immigration status, including from President Donald Trump, who said in a Truth Social post Solarzano is an "illegal migrant." A Mecklenburg District Court document obtained by Newsweek states that Solarzano is in the country illegally and has been previously deported.

Newsweek reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for comment via email on Saturday.
