The Somerton City Council will have the opportunity to continue advancing the improvement project in one of the city’s oldest subdivisions, thanks to a state grant that was approved for them.

On Tuesday, the agreement to accept the $480,965 grant from the Arizona Department of Housing’s CDBG fund was unanimously approved by the City Council.

Finance Director Chona Medel reminded the council members that the grant application had been approved for submission in August. With the approval of the agreement, the contract to utilize the funds will be finalized.

According to the contract, the third phase of the Somerton Heights project is expected to be awarded in March 2026, with work starting in May of the same year and concluding in January 2027.
