LIMESTONE CO., Ala. ( WAFF ) - An Athens teen is facing terrorism and attempted murder charges in a plot to kill Athens High School faculty and students, according to a new indictment from a Limestone County Grand Jury.

The indictment identified the teen as Carson Butler, who turned 18 in November.

Athens Police officials say they were contacted by the FBI in June, stating that Butler, who was 17 at the time, made a threat online against Athens High School’s students, faculty and school resource officers.

APD officials contacted school officials since there were school activities planned at some campuses over the summer. Additional officers, in uniform and under cover, were provided at campus events following the threats.
