The maneuvers took place close to islands claimed by both nations, adding strain to already fraught relations following Japan's recent warnings about responding to Chinese aggression toward Taiwan.

Japan reported that the Chinese J-15 jets had taken off from the Liaoning aircraft carrier accompanied by three missile destroyers, heightening the military posturing in the region.
