WPXI-TV is calling on Verizon/Fios to reverse its plan to block customers’ access to the station, a move that could black out the local NBC affiliate for Fios customers as early as Dec. 15.
In a news release Saturday, WPXI’s parent company, Cox Media Group, said it had secured what are called fair carriage deals with every other pay TV provider, contending that Verizon/Fios “appears intent on pulling WPXI from its lineup.” The lack of such a deal also could affect viewers in Boston, which also has a Cox Media Group affiliate.
“This has the potential to be a major disruption as key NFL matchups are set to air; college football nears the playoffs; and NBA, college basketball, and holiday programming get into full swing,” the news release said.
