Two lost fumbles and a savvy route run by a true freshman added up to Lehigh University’s unbeaten season coming to an end against Villanova in the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs Saturday afternoon.
The 12th-seeded Wildcats won their 10th game in a row, 14-7, over fifth-seeded Lehigh in a game between extremely evenly matched teams before an enthusiastic crowd of 8,848 at Goodman Stadium.
“You can’t turn the ball over against such a quality team in Villanova,” Lehigh coach Kevin Cahill said. “You can’t give them a short field. They took advantage of it. That last drive we had an opportunity (to tie the game) and just dropped the ball.”
Lehigh, in repeating as the Patriot League champion and rolling to a 12-0 record, fumbled just four times and lost only one. Against Villanova
