Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Saturday revealed that he faced severe criticism from members of his own community after advocating the application of the creamy layer principle in reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs).
Speaking at a lecture organised at Mumbai University on the occasion of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s death anniversary, Gavai said that Ambedkar envisioned reservation as a tool to bring those left behind at par with others. "Ambedkar compared reservation to giving a bicycle to someone who has fallen behind so that they can catch up. But that doesn’t mean a person should keep riding the bicycle forever and block opportunities for others," he remarked.
