In a morning routine aerial survey on Dec. 3, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium spotted something unusual about 10 miles off of Jekyll Island in Brunswick, Ga.—a young North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW) wrapped in rope.
"That's a somewhat rare event down here in the Southeast," said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southeast Large Whale Program Coordinator Clay George. Sightings of entangled whales in the region occur only every year or two.
