When she was a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Oklahoma, Kayla Wheeler taught a course that covered weather and climate. The meteorology graduate student thought about what would’ve happened to her if a student argued against climate change and created a spotlight on the debate as big as the one growing on her campus now.

"As an instructor at the time, I didn't have a whole lot of support, so I wouldn't have known how to deal with that," she said. "That would've been pretty scary."
