The Rajasthan government on Sunday implemented the ‘Respect for Deceased Bodies Act’, passed in the previous Congress regime, which considers subjects like protesting with holding a dead body, politicising a corpse, and delaying a funeral more than 24 hours criminal offences.
As per the new rules, the funeral of the deceased needs to be performed within 24 hours of the victim’s death. Special permissions to delay the funeral will only be provided if the victim’s relatives are outside the state or a post-mortem of the body has to be conducted. Besides, protesting by holding onto the deceased’s body, blocking roads, and trying to exert pressure will result in imprisonment of one to five years and a fine.
The new law also suggests that if the family members do not claim the deceased’s body
