OTTAWA COUNTY, MI - For Dave Feenstra, a retired principal at Hudsonville Public Schools, the best time of the week is Thursday at 9 a.m., when he hauls bins filled with food - apples, packets of Ramen noodles and jars of peanut butter - through school hallways.

He said joyful calls of “hey, teacher man” and “what’s up” follow him down the halls as he hands out the food items, which are intended to help students facing food insecurity on the weekends and during holiday breaks.

“They’re so caring,” Feenstra said of the students. “Their teachers shared with us that one of the boys was so happy to get this bag of food because he said, ‘My dad gets hungry too.’”

Feenstra, an educator with over 30 years’ experience, now works as a staff member at Hand2Hand , an Ottawa County nonprofit dist
