The seeds to Westlane’s consolation championship at the 62nd Standard Boys High School Tournament weren’t planted last week in St. Catharines.

Instead, they were planted the week before in Port Colborne, where the Spartans went 3-0 to take the title at their first pre-season tournament.

“The Port thing was really good for us because we could see who would fill certain roles we had because all of it’s a new group. The bulk of these guys have not played together except in junior ball, and the Grade 12s haven’t played with them at all,” Westlane head coach Brett Traves said after his team’s 74-54 victory over the E.L. Crossley Cyclone. “I think that first tournament gave them that opportunity where they thought, ‘No, we’re better than we think we are, we can play together, we can do well.’
