OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - An Omaha doctor was sentenced in federal court for health care fraud on Thursday.
68-year-old Jeffrey Edwards was sentenced to 12 months and one day of imprisonment and a three-year term of supervised release for nine counts of health care fraud.
Edwards was also ordered to pay nearly $190,000 in restitution and a $45,000 fine.
According to court documents, Edwards would travel outside of Nebraska while his clinic’s unsupervised staff met with patients, obtained vital signs, and issued prescriptions for controlled substances as needed.
The staff would then document the visit in the clinic’s health care record program and use Edwards’ login information to make it appear that Edwards completed the visit.
The clinic’s staff would then submit false health care claims
