Cutting benefits from migrant families risks plunging children into deep poverty, a cross-party group of politicians has warned.

Plans to make migrants who are in the UK legally wait up to 20 years before they can settle permanently threaten to push children into hardship, according to more than 80 mayors, council leaders and political figures.

The group are also calling for reforms to the conditions attached to many temporary migrant visas that prevent families from accessing welfare support, known as No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF).

It comes as the Government considers limiting benefits further to those “making an economic contribution”, with a consultation planned for 2026.
