It was a cold start to the week in Niagara, with temperatures dipping into the double digits below freezing.
But while it was cold enough for harvesting of Niagara’s signature crop — icewine grapes — temperatures have not dropped to the level to prompt extreme cold weather measures by Niagara Region’s public health department.
Environment and Climate Change Canada was calling for a high of -4 C Monday and a low of -10 C overnight. With the wind chill, it will feel like -15 C for anyone outside Monday night.
When temperatures drop to -15 C or below (or they feel like -20 C), a number of actions are triggered.
Extra shifts are added to the Niagara Assertive Street Outreach team to check on people experiencing unsheltered homelessness and connect them with the services they need. As well,
