Grain continues to be the main mover on the 3,700-kilometre St. Lawrence Seaway system, with shipments at 10.8 million tonnes year-to-date.

The latest figures released by St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. showed overall cargo shipments were up 0.94 per cent.

More than 32.6 million tonnes of cargo has been shipped since the seaway opened in late March.

Grain, up 10.43 per cent by the end of November compared to the same time last year, includes cargo such as wheat, corn, soybeans, barley, canola and oats.

Dry bulk cargo shipments were up 5.46 per cent. That cargo consists of commodities such as stone/gravel, sand, salt, cement, potash and gypsum.

Figures showed shipments of coal and general cargo, which includes iron and steel slabs, machinery and wind-energy turbines, were down 17.
