PENDLETON, Ind. — A man was convicted of attempted murder of a corrections officer at Pendleton Correctional Facility in 2023.
James E. Phillips, 47, was found guilty of attempted murder, prisoner possessing a deadly weapon and the habitual offender enhancement.
According to court documents, Phillips was an inmate at the Pendleton Correctional Facility when he attacked a corrections officer "multiple times" with a knife on the second floor of a cell block around 1 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2023.
The officer tried to radio for help, but was not able to as the Phillips began trying to stab him .
Another officer was able to tackle Phillips and put him in a chokehold.
The officer suffered a number of wounds to his nose, forehead and neck. The officer also had cuts on both sides of his body, on
