SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Teen girls have an opportunity to learn about a career in fire service at Camp Cinder.
The camp is currently accepting applications for sessions this summer.
Camp Cinder is a four-day experience where girls go through real-life firefighting scenarios. They learn how to lay fire hose, do extrications, put up ladders and even get experience with helicopters.
Their instructors are all women currently working in firefighting. Chelsea Burkett is a public information officer for Cal Fire. Camp Cinder didn't exist when she was young.
"This is the kind of camp we all wish we had when we were that age," Burkett said.
Burkett said prior Camp Cinder campers have gone on to study firefighting or volunteer with local fire departments. She believes the experience is a great c
