AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - The annual national tradition, born in Maine, that has now grown to more than three million veterans honored during the holiday season, is coming up this weekend.

Before the big day on Saturday, there was a ceremony at every state capital on Monday.

“The main mission statement is to remember, honor, and teach,” commented Wreaths of America Volunteer William Phillips.

It began with 5,000 leftover wreaths in Harrington, Maine more than 30 years ago that were placed on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

The goal is to make sure those who have served aren’t forgotten. It’s also for the families who feel an impact that is hard to describe.
