JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A former James City County police officer has been sentenced following the 2023 shooting of his superior officer.

Michael Trenton Rusk, 27, was charged with shooting another officer in January 2023 . Both were off duty at the time.

In a Monday hearing in Williamsburg/James City County Circuit Court, prosecutors withdrew the use of a firearm charge, according to the state’s online court information system. On the charge of unlawful wounding, he was found guilty and sentenced to three years, all of which was suspended, the online system states.

In a federal lawsuit filed in 2024, Rusk sued the city and police department , alleging sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. He said the officer he shot, Sgt. Christopher Gibson, had been making sexual adva
