A developer’s proposal to build a 12-story residential tower with ground-floor retail on Patten Parkway is drawing sharp opposition from leaders at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, who say the project could threaten the historic church’s structure, aesthetics, and accessibility.

The basilica, which is 135 years old, sits just feet from the property where the taller building is being proposed. Current zoning allows construction up to six stories, but the developer is seeking a rezoning change to double that height.

Church leaders say the increased size would have significant consequences — starting with the loss of natural light that filters through the basilica’s stained-glass windows.
