SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Georgians and South Carolinians can now wager on sports, award shows and other cultural events through prediction markets, even though sports betting and gambling remain illegal in both states.

Fanatics launched its prediction market platform, Fanatics Markets, in Georgia and South Carolina last week. The platform lets users trade contracts based on how events will unfold in sports, politics or entertainment.

Instead of traditional betting, users purchase contracts that pay out only if their predictions come true.

Jay Trikha, owner of Savannah Taphouse on Broughton Street, said fantasy teams are popular among patrons and expects the trend to grow with Fanatics Markets’ launch.

“Fantasy teams are definitely huge,” Trikha said.
