A recent article in Maryland Matters highlighted an extremely encouraging trend: Maryland is leading the country in our efforts to reduce overdoses. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Maryland saw the largest decrease in the country in non-fatal overdoses this year through August, with a 17% reduction.
This news comes as Maryland is experiencing dramatic reductions in fatal overdoses over the past few years. There were 1,767 overdose deaths in our state last year, according to preliminary data on Maryland’s Overdose Data Dashboard . This was a reduction of nearly 37% from our historic high of 2,800 in 2021, which followed dramatic increases across the country in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
