First lady Melania Trump promoted a high-dollar handbag on her social media accounts on Monday as her husband rages that the concerns Americans have about the cost of living are a "Democrat scam," according to a new report.
Melania Trump posted about a handbag designed by Alexandra Gucci Zarini, the great-granddaughter of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci, The Daily Beast reported on Monday. A fifth of the proceeds from the handbag's sale will support Fostering the Future, a White House initiative to provide employment opportunities to children in foster care, according to the report.
A boutique in Beverly Hills, California, listed the handbag for sale for $2,800.
"Your support of Fostering the Future is transforming lives - giving foster youth access to college, eventually leading to job security and financial independence," the first lady said in a post on X.
Her comments come at a time when many Americans say the cost of living is their top concern. According to a recent poll conducted by Politico, 46% of Americans say the cost of living is "the worst I can ever remember it being," including 37% of people who voted for Trump in 2024.
President Donald Trump recently described the term "affordability" as a "Democrat scam" as multiple Democrats ran successful election campaigns focused on the cost of living. For instance, Democrat Abigail Spanberger discussed affordability at seemingly every opportunity on her way to winning the Virginia governor's race in November.
Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani also made affordability a central part of his campaign for New York City mayor.
