BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) - The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers impersonating deputies and local financial institutions through phone calls and text messages.
The sheriff’s department posted on its Facebook page that scammers are spoofing their number and calling residents about warrants, missed jury duty, fines or payment programs.
The sheriff’s office says it will never call, text or email to request money, gift cards, Bitcoin, account information or any type of payment.
Several people have reported receiving texts or calls claiming to be from local financial institutions asking them to verify account activity or to log in through a provided link. Banks do not contact customers this way.
