Japan was assessing damage Tuesday and cautioning people of potential aftershocks after a late-night 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused injuries, minor damage and a tsunami in Pacific coastal communities.
Footage from NTV showed buildings shaking in the night time in Aomori and Hakodate.
The 7.5 magnitude quake struck around 11:15 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean, around 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan’s main Honshu Island.
Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said during a press briefing in Tokyo that at least 30 people were injured, one seriously.
"In addition, it has been assessed that, due to this earthquake, the likelihood of a major earthquake occurring from the Hokkaido region to off the Sanriku coast has increased compared with normal times," said Takaichi.
A tsunami of up to 70 centimeters (2 feet, 4 inches) was measured in Kuji port in Iwate prefecture, just south of Aomori, and waves up to 50 centimeters struck other communities in the region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
