Heroic cops plunged into a canal to try and save a pensioner after his Range Rover entered the icy water, but despite their best efforts the man has tragically died.

Officers were able to get the 74-year-old driver out of the water but he later passed away at the scene.

The tragic incident occurred near Saltaire, Bradford on Sunday night, as cops were called to reports of a silver Range Rover Evoque in the canal.

Pictures from the scene show the vehicle fully submerged in the frigid water.

Emergency services rushed to the scene with brave officers wading into the water to try and save the driver. Despite being able to pull him from the vehicle, the man sadly passed away despite desperate attempts to save his life.
