LAKE CITY — As cash reserves dwindled, officials in this small Florence County city spent more $90,000 over the past two years on travel to conferences and other events, according to bank records obtained by The Post and Courier.

Those expenditures on Lake City’s credit card appear to violate the city’s own purchasing policies, officials said.

One trip alone — a weeklong visit to the nation’s capital — cost more than $23,000 for an eight-person delegation’s transportation and lodging at an upscale hotel, records show.

The itinerary devoted much of the visit to sightseeing, and the city’s new administrator said he found no evidence the trip yielded any new funding for city projects — the stated goal of the journey.
