A Honolulu police officer was injured early today when a man in a reported mental health crisis stabbed him during a disturbance inside a Kuhio Avenue residence, police said.

District 6 officers responded at about 12:20 a.m. and encountered an armed 25-year-old man in crisis with family members present, according to police.

During the encounter, the man allegedly stabbed an HPD officer, injuring him. Police said the suspect also injured himself. The officer later drove himself to a hospital and was listed in good condition.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police opened an attempted murder investigation, which remains ongoing.
